In states from Alabama to California, a house with a home security system can still be vulnerable if the surrounding neighborhood is a favorite location for criminals. Part of creating a safe home is promoting a secure community. Improving neighborhood security can reduce crime significantly. Five steps will help to improve the security in any community.

5. Organize A Watch

One of the most effective ways to improve neighborhood security is to organize a community watch. This can take many different forms depending on the community. A watch could be a group of people who walk the streets looking for suspicious behavior. It could also be a period of time each day where neighbors sit outside watching for crime. The purpose of the watch is to report suspicious activities and not to engage potential criminals. The presence of neighbors on the streets will deter many criminals.

4. Stay Informed And Communicate

Information and communication are two tools that will make any neighborhood safer. Everyone in the community should remain engaged with local news and should be aware of crime trends in the area. Neighbors who see or experience suspicious activities should report them to the community so everyone will know what is happening. This can detect potential problems before and crimes occur. Setting up a community website or tip line will help to promote communication between neighbors.

3. Install Home Security Systems

As many homes in the community as possible should have a home security system. This is effective in many states from Alabama to Washington. Criminals tend to skip homes that have security systems. A neighborhood full of protected homes will become very unattractive to thieves and vandals. With home security systems from a company such as Vivint Everett WA communities can use advanced monitoring to detect and report attempted thefts.

2. Use Lights

From home security in Huntsville AL to home security in Los Angeles, all homes will benefit from lighting on homes and the street. Home security must include lights on the outside of the house and on the property around the house. Landscape lighting on lawns or along sidewalks is effective as well. Petitioning the local municipality could result in better street lighting. Lights make criminals visible and identifiable. They frequently deter break-ins.

1. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

CPTED is the idea that changes to the layout of the neighborhood and individual properties will reduce crime. Part of implementing this type of crime prevention is to build fences that make it impossible to move unseen between adjacent properties. It also means avoiding the placement of trees or hedges that provide cover for a criminal who is attempting to pick a lock or break a window. This type of neighborhood will drive away criminals since the design makes it easy to be caught and prosecuted.

This is a brief guide to help homeowners in Milwaukee inspect a home, before they buy it. Using this method, you can look for tell tale signs of both infestation and hidden damages. It’s not uncommon for an inspector to miss something when they go through, so, even if you’ve hired one, do a check yourself as well. When you do, follow this guideline. It’s a systems approach that has you checking everything relevant in every part of the house. These systems include: foundation, carpentry, interior finishing, siding and flashing, power and utilities, HVAC including chimneys, plumbing and roof.

The Tale Of the Crawlspace

Virtually every part of your house has some element of it active in the crawlspace. Even so, it amazes me how few private inspectors actually go under a house to inspect it. In a crawlspace, you will inspect all but your exterior walls and roof. In addition, you should have a vapor barrier of black 6 mil plastic over the dirt. Be extra vigilant for signs of rodent chew or stench. Look for rotten wood, because it is a breeding ground for termites and carpenter ants. Check and see if all of your vent lines are properly attached and strapped up. Holes in vents are a major access conduit for pests to enter the home, and a major loss of heat and cooling energy. Look for any moisture.

Inside and Outside

Write down all the systems you are looking at, and make notes next to the ones that need to be addressed. When you are done in the crawlspace, move up through the house. First check the perimeter. Look for ground water build-up or clogged gutters, broken siding, garbage, or even dirt buildup near an exterior wall. Check flashing and caulking around windows and around other trim. Look and see if soffitts are firm or sagging. Take a look at the paint job in general and assess if it is effectively shedding water. Go inside and check drywall, carpets, and the condition of laminate floors. This can reveal mold, mites and fleas, and rotted out sub-floors.

Moisture Monsters

The most damaging thing to a home is prolonged contact with water. When wood rots, it becomes a breeding ground for insects, and even when it dries out, it will continue to rot. If you are thinking of buying a home, and you see that there are a lot of traps and poison around, you may be looking at a persistent rodent problem that takes year round maintenance. Most often, people will see clues, and will rightfully assume that they need to check into it further. After you’ve found something that has you wondering, get a contractor to look at it and give you a bid, instead of getting another inspection. If the problem is pests, call the best rodent control Milwaukee has to offer. See what they think is the extent of the problem.

When we initially have that first thought that we will need to pack and move everything in the house it can feel overwhelming. It’s easier said than done to just feel relaxed and calm during your move. However, there are some ways to achieve this without just telling yourself to be relaxed.

The Crucial Decision: Choosing the Right Movers

We all like to save money if we can get our friends to help us move. Although, you should seriously consider hiring movers. It’ll make your back and friends happy. Make sure you read reviews on the movers if shown or ask for a reference from a friend or family member. You’ll also need to make sure you have cash on hand so that you can tip them after the job is done. Directions will be important and being organized with where things are and should go will help speed up the process.

Giving the Post Office Enough Time to Find You

First thing you’ll need to do is fill out the change of address form with your post office. You should do this at least two weeks before you move but no sooner than three months. It can also take up to 10 postal business days for your mail to show up at your new place so don’t worry if you aren’t getting it right away.

Start Packing the Right Way

Sometimes it’s hard to know where to start when packing. Here’s a few things you can do to help you get started. Just before you start packing you can go ahead and get rid of unwanted items. This means you can prepare for your garage sale and start organizing things that you don’t need at all. It’ll mean less boxes to pack and you can breathe a little easier. From this point you can start packing similar items in their respective boxes and label each box so you can run through what items are packed and what items aren’t there.

Moving Your Refrigerator

Refrigerator takes more work than some people think. You need to make sure that your refrigerator is completely dry before you start moving it. It may even be easier to just leave the refrigerator with the house and a good excuse to get a new one if you’ve had your previous one for a long time. Nonetheless, you would still need to know if your refrigerator would fit well in your new home. So take the proper measurements and see if it would fit well before you start packing your refrigerator up.

Look Around Do You Still See Unpacked Belongings? Don’t Fret

Sticking to a schedule can really help ease your stress levels. Even if you’re not on time you can readjust and make changes to fit it. Take a deep breath and realize it’ll be alright. Stop procrastinating and start working once you feel the motivation running through. Put on some good music and start packing those other items. Remember to check if all your outdoor items are all packed up. If it’s coming down to a point where you don’t think it’s doable then you can look into professional packers who can get the job done in the time frame you need. Just make sure you check if you are on schedule at the end of every day.

Final Thoughts to Leave You With

Stress is a huge problem when it comes to moving and storing things properly. You can easily forget important items because your mind is all over the place. Just take some time to wind down and think about different ways you like to feel relaxed. Feeling comfortable, confident, and relaxed is how you want to approach any move where a lot of organization is needed. Don’t procrastinate on packing anything that will cause you to not be on schedule. One tip that some people might forget is to change the locks on your door because there is nothing more stressful than wondering who else has the key to your house. Take a few extra big bags with you in case you need to throw loose items in them that you saw last minute and have no place to go. Hopefully this article will help you feel more organized before your big move and gives you a general guideline on how to stay focused and relaxed during your move. It’s important to feel happy and have a good experience with moving because it can be easy t forget a thing here and there. With the proper organization skills and clear thinking you should be able to handle the move and have the plan run smoothly.

Many people would like to do something to save the environment but believe they do not have a large paycheck to make a difference. However, a significant part of going green involves each individual doing his/her part. This does not have to cost much.

Most people know that going green is good for the environment. However, not everyone knows that going green does not just benefit humanity and the environment, but it also helps them save money! This is a situation that people would be happy to live with. Make a home more eco-friendly by following these tips.

1. Use Less Water

Saving water involves taking certain steps that may seem small but have a big impact. Such steps include shutting off taps that are not in use, doing laundry in full loads and buying fixtures from sustainable manufacturers.

2. Use Less Energy

Even people who do not have enough money to purchase hybrid cars can do enough to make their homes energy efficient. One of the tactics is to convert the house to solar power. Another option is to buy energy efficient electrical appliances. Such appliances may be more expensive but they help homeowners save on energy bills. Their initial cost of purchase is higher but they have low maintenance costs and use less energy.

In addition, unplug all chargers that are not in use because they keep consuming energy even when not in use. Those who travel a lot can walk or use a bike for short distances. One of the most efficient energy conservation measures includes installing a Louisville KY home automation system with energy saving technologies. Gone are the days when all they did was alert the police, now home automation includes remote control of your homes’ heating as well as solar power technology. The monthly fee easily pays for itself in energy savings.

3. Reuse

This is one the three principles of sustainability, the remaining two being recycle and reduce. However, reusing is one of the least emphasized conservation strategies. While there are many tips on how to reuse, all people need to implement this conservation strategy is to have a creative mind.

Many items in a home can be reused. For instance, people can use toilet paper holders to plant vegetables; cut yoghurt containers into strips and use them as plant labels or make beautiful vases from used food jars.

4. Use Eco-friendly products

As people go shopping, they probably see new eco-friendly products once a while. However, such products are expensive and may not be 100% natural. Those who want to use eco-friendly products can make some for themselves. For example, instead of buying certain dishwashing liquids use vinegar and baking soda.

5. Involve the Whole Family

As far as making a home environmentally friendly goes, parents should include the kids into this effort. They should teach the kids the importance of going green and why they need to shut off taps completely after use or switch off lights when they are not needed. This makes it a collective effort.

Storage space isn’t just for moving anymore! Summer vacation is fast approaching and you’ve accumulated a stock pile of toys and games to occupy your children. That’s all well and good, but you don’t want to be tripping over a mountain of play things throughout the season. You’re wondering where everything will go once the season is over. Don’t sweat it. With a little bit of savvy, you’ll find a place for everything without any headaches.

Utilize Your Space

Take a good look at your home and decide if you have any extra space. There might be room in your shed, the rafters of the garage, the basement, or your attic. However, if these places are bursting at the seams, it’s time to think about other alternatives.

Consider A Storage Unit

Self storage can be a lifesaver. Tampa FL storage units provide an excellent example of what you need. You can find some facilities that have units in various sizes. Your overflow will be secure and you’ll have access when you need it. This is also a great opportunity to store other seasonal items. Out of sight, out of mind. Take a look at

http://www.extraspace.com/Storage/Facilities/US/Arizona/Mesa/501625/Facility.aspx for inspiration.

Put In Shelving

Shelves are a great way to go when you are looking for a quick fix. From plastic, to wood or metal, there are many options that are available. Find something in your price range that is acceptable for your decor.

What About Closet Space?

If possible, reorganize closets to make room for some of these summer items. Ransack your children’s rooms in order to relocate excess toys. Make them be responsible for putting things away when they are done.

Think Garage Sale

At the end of summer, think about the toys and games that have accumulated. Was there anything they didn’t use? Will they grow out of anything? This is the time to consider holding a garage sale or making donations to charity.

Share

Another way to limit an overflow of summer toys and games is sharing. Go in on items with a good friend or family member. Take turns finding a home for these items. Store some at your home and send the rest elsewhere with the understanding that you’ll use them again.

When you think outside the box, you can find a place for everything. Make sure your children are part of the tea, cleaning up as well.

How to Keep Your Pets Happy When Moving House

Moving house is stressful enough for humans, but it can be even more confusing and unsettling for our pets. Children can often become upset during house moves, but at least you can explain and reason with a child. Animals can be highly territorial and may need additional care and attention to accept the move.

This article details some suggestions for helping a house move with a furry friend go as smoothly as possible.

Pre move preparation

Get an identity collar tag with your pets name and your contact number available to anyone who may find the stranded animal. Frequently cats, dogs and other animals with honing instincts will return to their original home. It may be necessary to test out a few collar designs as some animals have become expert at slipping out of them. Having the collar in place means that even if they do go missing they can be returned to you.

Cats and dogs suffer from travel sickness, so go to your vet before the journey and ask for some medication to make the journey easier for both of you. If you are fortunate to have a friend or family member that can look after your pet on the day of the move then take this opportunity. Pets become very scared of removal men coming in and out of your new home with large items and bulky boxes. Some people opt to keep their pet with their friends/family or even a kennel for a couple of days after the move to make the new home as comforting as possible for the pet.

Before the move, ensure they have had their microchips updated, they have been registered with a new vet (depending on the distance you have moved) and update your pet insurance policy.

Moving day

The unpredictable things going on around your pet is going to cause it to be distressed, and if you haven’t sent it off for a sleepover with grandma and granddad then you need to know how to make moving day as smooth as possible.

If you have cats then gather them before the move and consider using a pheromone spray to calm them down. Some people give their dogs treats and put them in their cage or hold them until the van is filled and you ready to follow.

After the move

It will take some time for your pets to return to their normal behavior after the move. They will likely spend a great deal of time frantically roaming around the new home and garden to discover their new space.

Show them the rooms they will be allowed in from the start and the room and bed they will be sleeping in. It is important to let them sleep before being allowed to freely explore the neighborhood. This is because of the unfortunate cases of cats and dogs roaming after losing all sense of location once moving.

If you are a dog owner then make sure to check the garden carefully, to ensure it is secure and your dog could not escape through the fence.

A long-distance move is an exciting time leading to new opportunities. It can also be an expensive time, and many people lose money unnecessarily due to inefficient and unsafe packing. With that in mind, let us consider five essential steps you can take to ensure that you can pack everything in a safe manner.

#5. Pare Down

Perhaps the most common mistake is unnecessary packing. The smaller your pack is, the easier it is to manage, so avoid taking anything that you can easily replace at the destination. In fact, many items are actually more expensive to relocate than they are to discard and re-buy. So leave that old satellite dish behind, and get a new one installed free at your destination through www.cable-tv.com.

#4. Use Proper Cartons

Avoid the urge to pack using those free secondhand boxes from the local grocery. Professional moving boxes don’t cost as much as you might think, and they offer a number of advantages. Firstly, they’ll hold up to the rigors of the long-distance move, and secondly, they’ll allow you to pick the perfect size rather than conform to those sizes available free.

#3. Avoid Empty Space

An advantage of a properly sized moving box is that you avoid empty space. Empty space is the leading cause of property damage during a move because the contents in the carton slide around and damage each other. The best way to pack a box is to make maximum use of the available space and then fill in the remaining gaps using packing peanuts or something similar.

#2. Pack Fragile Items Individually

Don’t rely on the packing material within a carton to protect fragile items. A strong vibration can do damage despite there being hardly any space at all. Therefore, for glassware and similar possessions, wrap each item individually in packing paper, and then use a packing material to remove the gaps. Dishpack is a type of insert for moving boxes that is particularly convenient and often a better option than packing peanuts when dealing with fragile items.

#1. Pack with a Plan

Pack with your destination in mind. Packing room by room is fine, but you should be filling boxes based on the rooms at the destination rather than the ones at your current home. Make sure to label each carton appropriately, and if a box holds fragile contents, write FRAGILE on it in big block letters. Make an inventory of each box, and if you’re using a moving service, take a picture of all valuable boxes before you seal them.

In all of the commotion, you’ll likely get swept up in packing, moving on time and making sure your old home is in good shape. That’s why many people forget to make a final checklist for their new home. In many cases, the home you’ll be moving into will be in good shape, but there a few last-minute things you should check. If you don’t, you may have to pay for them out of pocket or just live with them.

Have the Pipes Checked

One of the biggest expenses a new homeowner can face is faulty pipes. In many cases, you’re not going to know whether or not the pipes are good unless you hire an inspector to do the work for you. Often times, the previous seller of the home will agree to split the cost of an inspection with your or knock the cost off the sale price if you buy the house. Not checking the pipes before you buy could cost you thousands of dollars in repairs, making a good buy seem like a total nightmare.

Make Sure the Carpet Is Clean

It might seem like a small thing, but carpet cleaning in Orange County can add up to a big expense, especially if you have a large space with a lot of carpet to clean. Before you move into a new home, you should always discuss having the carpet cleaned with the previous owner or property management company. In most cases, they’ll probably have the carpet shampooed before you even arrive, but if they don’t, you need to ask them to do it. It’s hard to fully clean carpet once you have your furniture and household goods in place, so try to have it done a few days before your schedule move.

Check Utility Service

If you’re moving into a rental property and the utilities will be paid for by the owner, you need to give the owner a call and verify the date that all of the utilities will be turned on and working. Otherwise, you may arrive in the dark with no running water. If you’re going to be paying the utilities, make sure you schedule the turn-on date with the appropriate utility company at least one week ahead of time. In some major metropolitan cities, having a service turned on can take more time than just a few days.

While there are safe cities in virtually every continent, some countries are much safer than others. Threats come in a variety of different forms, whether they be from violence and terrorism or from inclement weather conditions that humans are not designed to survive in. In 2013 there is still a considerable amount of political instability, murder, and human rights issues that put the population at risk. Here are the 10 safest countries to live in consider each of the above factors.

1. Iceland

Do you want to live in a country with a 0% crime rate? Iceland is the only country that has a 0% crime rate and no real enemies throughout the world. Iceland, which is a very confusing name, is very green and a happy place to live. It also has the most stable economy in the world for those trying to avoid economic uncertainty.

2. New Zealand

Human rights is extremely important in New Zealand. With a focus on respect for life, New Zealand is a great place for foreigners who want to relocate somewhere safe and be accepted.

3. Tuvalu

Tuvalu, which is a hidden island, is located right between Australia and Hawaii. One of the reasons why Tuvalu is so safe is probably because many people do not know it exists. It is the first country in the world that does not use fossil fuels, and this makes quality of life much better for residents.

4. Denmark

If you are looking for a country that has mild climates and low crime rates, Denmark may be the place for you. Not only is Denmark safe for adults, it is also the safest country for children because of all of the child services that are available to residents.

5. Ireland

Friendly does not always translate into safe, but in Ireland it does. Ireland has some of the friendliest people in the world as residents, all who believe in living life and having fun. While some scenes can be rowdy, Ireland has very low crime rates.

6. Norway

In Norway, residents are free to follow whichever religion they desire. This freedom, combined with the fact that the nation is prosperous, makes Norway a very politically stable place to live.

7. Australia

When you think of Australians, you think of friendly people who welcome you with open arms. Not only are people friendly here, the land is also very beautiful and full of natural resources. These resources make the country prosperous, which keeps the crime rates low.

8. Austria

Not only does Austria have a low crime rate, the country is also surrounded by mountains which keeps it safe from foreign invaders and declarations of war. If you want to live in a neutral nation that has pledged never to join a military alliance, you can live military-free in Austria.

9. Finland

Like Austria, Finland has found a way to avoid international conflicts with other nations. In this country, there is no terrorism and no violence. The police system is better than most, and the courts are run independently instead of by the government.

10. Sweden

While Sweden is a major exporter of weapons, the country has very low crime rates and virtually no violence.

If you are ready to pack and move to a country where violence does not exist, the economy is stable, and people are free to worship, these countries top the list. If moving is not an option, find a way to make your home safer by installing home security systems and systems that automate your home like the x10. Take time to feel safer in your home and in your city and take action.

Moving to Oregon and into a new home can be both an exciting and scary prospect. It can be a fresh start for your family, but there are also risks involved. To help alleviate some of your concerns, below are a few tips you can use when moving into a new house.

1. Make Sure You Can Safely Drink the Water

One thing that many people do not think about is whether or not drinking the water from a faucet in a new home is safe. Not every house has city water that is routinely treated and tested for contaminants. Many homes use a well. It is possible that the water from such a well may be contaminated with things like arsenic. Make sure the water has been recently tested for contaminants and that some kind of working filtration system is in place.

2. Consider Home Security

You may be moving into a neighborhood with a different crime-rate than your previous home. Even if the crime-rate is the same, burglary, home invasion and other things are sadly still possible. This is why home security is important.

One thing you should consider is installing a home security system for your house. If someone tries to break into your home, the authorities will be immediately notified. Alarms, cameras and signs alerting others of the use of a home security system can also be great deterrents. One company that sells and installs such systems at a reasonable price is Vivint.

However, Make sure that you read reviews on the company to make sure they offer the services you really want. This is simple to do just type in “Vivint Reviews” (Or another company) in your search bar to find reviews. You can contact the closest division of Vivint, such as Everett WA Vivint home security for more information.

3. Make Sure the Home Was Properly Inspected

Your home should have been inspected well before you even purchased it let alone moved into it. However, sadly, many inspectors do a poor job and miss or overlook things that can become a headache later. For example, if a house has a faulty heating system, it can certainly become a nightmare when the weather gets colder. Make sure any inspection is very thorough and accurate.

4. Change the Locks

Another thing that many people forget is to change their locks before moving in. This can be a great security risk since the previous owner may not even have all the keys to the house to give you. Instead, get the locks changed. Also consider hiring a company like Vivint to automate the locks as part of your home security system.

5. Reprogram the Garage Door Remotes

Similarly, not reprogramming your garage door opener can be another great security risk. Thankfully, most garage door remotes can be easily reset. If you can’t figure out how, contact the manufacturer.
